Can you tell us a little bit about your history and involvement with solar installations?

John Hurt:
I was employed by a plumbing company after working for a construction firm owned by a friend of my father. After 8 years of experience in the plumbing trade as a journeyman plumber, I tested for and received a State of California Contractors License to install solar hydronic heating systems in April 1977. My company is one of the oldest solar companies in California. Sun Works Company is now designing and installing solar hydronic heating systems all over the world.

What exactly is INDEKSOLAR©?

John Hurt:
INDEKSOLAR© is a very unique solar tubing design for heating swimming pools and spas utilizing concrete or asphalt surfaces in pool decks, tennis courts, driveways, building walls, retaining walls and fence walls. Most of our INDEKSOLAR© heating systems are installed in freshly poured concrete but we have also developed a new pool heating. We can also retrofit existing asphalt sports court by mechanically grinding grooves into the surface, inserting INDEKSOLAR© tubing into the grooves , then grouting over the tubing flush with the asphalt surface and resurface the entire tennis court. The old cracked asphalt tennis court surface is now like new and ready for tournaments.

How long have you been involved with INDEKSOLAR© and is it only used for swimming pools?

John Hurt:
Sun Works Company has been designing and installing INDEKSOLAR© for over 25 years.
We have also developed INDEKSOLAR© to be used for geothermal cooling and heating and for building space air-conditioning and heating. Two water wells are drilled, then we direct the cold water from the primary well into the building water/air exchanger and use it for cooling just like a typical air-conditioning system accomplishes but without the refrigeration pump, saving a lot of energy use.

The heat is then pumped out to the INDEKSOLAR© concrete or asphalt surface and terminates into the secondary well. This not only saves a tremendous amount of money, but provides an added free bonus of snow-melt for the drive-way and sidewalks. We are also installing an INDEKSOLAR© heating system for an agricultural application, a methane digester for turning cattle manure into methane gas. Methane gas sequestering is one of the most problematic greenhouse gases. It is more destructive to the earth’s atmosphere than any other gas.

What are your typical types of installations?

John Hurt:
I would have to say that INDEKSOLAR© pool heating systems are the most popular with the INDEKSOLAR© tubing installed in driveways and pool decks.

Greener Living Today:
Is there any kind of tax credit offered by the government for this type of solar application?

John Hurt:
There are currently no tax credits for pool solar heating systems, but mandates are coming soon. There are 30% tax credits, with no monetary caps, for any solar hydronic heating and geothermal air-conditioning system for residential or commercial buildings.
The caps were removed from the previous solar tax credit bill in February 2009. This presents a huge saving on a solar hydronic solar system investment. A $10,000.00 solar domestic/hot/water heater investment will provide a tax credit of $3,000.00. Sun Works Company can also install an above ground solar hydronic heating system for heating water, radiant floor heating systems and pool and spa with a single solar hydronic panel array. All of our multi-use solar, or what I like to call them, ALL-IN-ONE solar heating systems, are designed with special computer software.

What is the lifespan of INDEKSOLAR© systems?

John Hurt:
INDEKSOLAR© pool heating systems have a projected service life of over 50 years.
Since the tubing is invisible to the eyes as well as sunlight, it does not biodegrade, and in most installed areas, suffer from freeze damage. Above ground solar panels suffer from ultra-violet degradation unless they are made from copper instead of the usual bonded plastic or rubber.
The complete system has a twenty year warranty. Our oldest INDEKSOLAR© heating system has never needed any servicing to this date.

What does someone who is interested in having this system installed need to know beforehand?

John Hurt:
INDEKSOLAR© is a larger investment than an above ground plastic solar pool heating system, but will outlast it, with care-free service, by at least 30 years.
INDEKSOLAR© requires a deck area surface that is double the size of the swimming pool water surface.
Example: 400 sq. ft. pool water surface x 200% = 800 sq. ft. deck of INDEKSOLAR© surface area.
INDEKSOLAR© requires full sunlight from 9:00am through 5:00pm.
INDEKSOLAR© has an advantage when the deck area is below the pool water surface level, but not when the deck is more than 20 feet above that level.
INDEKSOLAR© does not require up-sizing of filter pump which is used for the circulation of filtered pool water through the INDEKSOLAR© tubing.
INDEKSOLAR© pool heating systems do not alter the pool water filtration system flow rate or compromise the sanitation of the swimming pool water like above ground solar pool heating systems often can.
