Joe Conti – The Chapman Stick & The Warr Guitar

Posted by:

After a long day of eco-adventure, its time to relax, with some great local music.

In pursuit of the perfect Green vacation on Maui, we were on the go everyday.  There were excursions to review, photography to take, research to do, beaches to clean and at the end of the day, there was Joe Conti, there to entertain us at the Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas – Ocean Pool Bar & Grille – Thursday & Fridays 5-8. Joe Conti, P.O. Box 557, Captain Cook, Hawaii 96704 808-328-8106,,

Tough economic times have hit Hawaii and good local music once everywhere, has become a luxury for many hotels and restaurants.  As a result, local musicians are scrambling for gigs and the vacationer is denied access to some great entertainment.

joe_conti2Joe’s music caught our attention because of the instrument he played. As we sipped a Mai Tai, we debated over what it was.  It had the sound of a synthesizer, having the versatility of a piano on a portable, stringed instrument. During break, we had to check it out. Joe explained that the “Stick” and the “Warr Guitar” are played with a two-handed tapping technique. Each hand can play single notes or chords as on a piano, yet with string bending and slides as on a guitar. Joe’s repertoire consisted of pretty much anything you wanted to hear: Jazz, Hawaiian, Reggae, Latin, Rock & Roll, Country, Blues, Funk, New Age and more!   So, the next time you’re in Hawaii check out his website for his gig schedule, remember to fill out those hotel customer comment cards requesting more live music, and leave some “Green” in those “Mahalo” baskets!
