AISO.net – Solar Powered Web Hosting

Posted by:

Affordable Internet Services Online, Inc.

AISO has been a trusted name in environmentally friendly web hosting since 1997 and was featured in Inc. Magazines’ Top 50 Green Companies and was the first public data center member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). AISO has over 13 years of providing high quality, affordable web site hosting.

Phil Nail, CTO, agreed to be interviewed by Greener Living Today.

Greener Living Today:
What compelled you to create a solar powered hosting company and how did you get started as a provider?

Phil Nail:
We have always been eco minded and we felt this was the thing to do. In fact we are more than just solar powered. We harvest rain water from our building. We have 4, 2,500 gallon water tanks and in the last 30 days we have collected over 6,000 gallons of water.

Greener Living Today:
A lot of hosting companies claim to be “solar powered”, but in fact they purchase Renewable Energy Credits. Your company is one of the few who is truly solar powered. Can you tell us how many panels you utilize and are you entirely off the grid?

Phil Nail:
We currently have 120 panels and we will be adding more this year. We are fully off the grid. The other companies claiming to be 100% solar powered rent dedicated servers from AISO and brand them under their own company name. They rent the servers but they manage their servers and install their own software.

Greener Living Today:
Is the performance of websites hosted by AISO compromised in any way as a result of being powered by solar energy?

Phil Nail:
None whatsoever.

Greener Living Today:
You make mention of the fact that your electricity is environmentally friendly and that you are powered by sun, water and air. Can you tell us more about that?

Phil Nail:
Sun powered is powered by the sun. Water powers our air units. Air is how our bandwidth comes in. Our air units are very eco friendly. They only use 600 watts at max output. Most of the time the systems are idle, which mean they are only using around 150 watts of power. Our bandwidth is all wireless, provided by three different wireless companies over three different wireless links. The links are fast and reliable and give us N+1 redundancy.

Greener Living Today:
What types of hosting plans and services do you offer?

Phil Nail:
Both Linux and Windows, as well as dedicated servers.

Greener Living Today:
In closing, what would you like to say to those who are looking for alternative, earth friendly hosting solutions and don’t know where to start?

Phil Nail:
I would suggest they start by using a totally green company, AISO preferred. Not all green hosting companies are the same, most use green credits and low end servers. Some have tech support in India, others only do tech support by email. I would suggest to check the reputation of the company they are going to host with to make sure they do not have lots of negative reviews. Call the phone number and make sure you can get hold of someone. Also, send their tech support an email to make sure you get a timely response.
